The Cleveland's had their own home, Oak View, in what was then a rural part of D C.
They had small children and needed the privacy.
They lived in the White House only from December to March which was called the "social season".
Cleveland "commuted" to work but did much of his Presidential work from home, calling cabinet members and others to meetings at Oak View.
