My Presidential Library
Yesterday I finished work early so I decided to stop at Home Depot on the way home and pick up an extra bookshelf. We have a spare bedroom downstairs that doesn't get used much, so I decided to convert it into a reading room/library. My collection of Presidential biographies and other informational books has grows, so I decided to put them all in one place. The order is: generic or encyclopedia style books first, then they progress in chronological order of president from Washington to Obama. I think I have at least one bio on each president. There was still some space on the bottom of one of the bookshelves so I filled that up with other political bios of almost presidents, people like Henry Clay, Thomas Dewey, Barry Goldwater, etc. I snapped a few pictures, which I've put behind the cut below.
1-2. A couple of overview shots.
3. These two shelves have the generic books (including "Which President Killed a Man" by James Humes and Ian Randal Strock's "Presidential Book of Lists") and invidual bios of Presidents from Washington to Polk. I plan to add Ron Chernow's new biography of Washington soon. I think I have more books on Polk than any other prez.
4. These shelves run from Zachary Taylor to JFK. They include an old copy of "The Strange Death of President Harding", Gaston Means' conspiracy theory smear from the 1920s that accuses Mrs. Harding of offing her husband.
5-6. This section is Kennedy to Reagan. It includes a number of books about the Kennedy assassination, including Jim Garrison's controversial "On the Trail of the Assassins".
7-8. This is the rest of the bunch: Bush 41 to Obama, along with some miscellaneous political bios thrown in to fill out the shelf.
9-10. These include some Civil War bios and the Presidential Dollar collection thus far issued. Included in this picture is a very rare find: the old looking book without a spine is a very old biography of George McClellan (called "McClellan's Own Story") that I found in a used bookstore. It is autographed by the author.
