Uncle Tom's Cabin

On this date in 1851 Uncle Tom's cabin began serialization in National Era, an abolitionist publication. It was published as a book the following year.
In 1862, when Lincoln met Harriet Beecher Stowe he supposedly said "So,this is the little
woman who started the great war." This is probably apocryphal as Stowe made no mention of it in a letter to her husband written shortly after her meeting with Lincoln.

On June 12, 1963 fifty years ago,and 113 years after the publication of Uncle Tom, Medgar Evers a civil rights worker has killed. The legacy of the civil war lived on. In my county in Maryland there are still struggles, not overt, not violent. But the remnants of inequality still haunt us.
