Bubba's Siblings

President Bill Clinton is unique among presidents in many ways, some of which he probably wishes he wasn't. Clinton is the only president (according to James Humes, author of Which President Killed a Man to have siblings who served time in jail for criminal offences. Clinton had not one, but two siblings in this category.

More famous is Clinton's half-brother Roger Cassidy Clinton Jr. Roger is the son of Clinton's stepfather Roger Clinton Sr. and his mother Virginia Clinton Kelly. In 1985 Roger pled guilty to cocaine distribution. He was sentenced to one year in prison. He had been caught in a sting operation. In January of 2001, Roger received a pardon from his brother the president for this offence.

Less well-known is Dianne Dwire Welch, Clinton's half-sister, who did time for a bank robbery in Virgina. In 1992, when Clinton was running for president, he is reported to have hidden her away from the media in a motel under an alias. According to an article on Newsmax.com, the Clinton step-sister who pleaded guilty to a 1985 (a bad year for the family it seems) armed robbery of a Texas bank, after which she allegedly knocked over a local doughnut shop. Welch drew probation as a first offender, only to get nabbed for dealing drugs the next year. For that she did six years behind bars.

The Clinton step-sister was the product of a past marriage by one of Virginia Clinton's ex-husbands, and news of her connection to the then-candidate threatened to derail Clinton's 1992 presidential bid at the last minute. Just days before the polls opened, Clinton learned that Welch was about to go to the National Enquirer with the story of her bank-robbing, drug-dealing past. Reportedly agents, dispatched by the campaign, removed the president-to-be's step-sister to a Texas Holiday Inn till the election was safely over.

Even if you're the President of the United States, you can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family.
