All the Presidents' Heads
One of the humorous references to Presidents of the United States can be found in the cartoon television series Futurama, the story of a slacker named Phillip J. Fry, who is accidentally frozen cryogenically just as the world is celebrating the turn of the millenium in 2000, only to be reawakened in the year 3000. Through a series of calamities and coincidences, Fry finds employment as a delivery boy for Planet Express, a company operated by a descendent of his, Professor Farnsworth.
In this futuristic world, the heads of the President of the United States are kept alive in jars and kept at something called the "Head Museum". This gag is used from time to time during the episodes, including episode 7 of season 2, called A Head in the Polls, in which the head of Richard Nixon is elected as President of the Earth.
In Episode 111 in season 6, entitled All the Presidents Heads, we once again visit the heads of the Presidents as Phillip Fry takes a night job as a watchman at the Head Museum. In the course of that employment, we see Fry partying with the Presidential heads, who take on their historically reputed personalities. For example, Thomas Jefferson is portrayed as a hemp smoker, and Ulysses Grant is shown as a heavy drinker. In one scene, someone asks where Grant is, and the response is that he's "throwing up in the bushes." The bushes turn out to be the heads of George H.W. and George W. Bush.
After learning from George Washington's head that one of his own ancestors was one of American history's most nefarious traitors during the American Revolutionary War, Professor Farnsworth becomes determined to salvage his family's reputation by transporting himself, Fry, and others back to colonial-era New York. After encounters with Benjamin Franklin and Paul Revere, the episode addresses what can go wrong when one tries to change the future.
From all indications this won't be the last time the Futurama crew visit the Presidents' heads. An upcoming season 7 episode is entitled Decision 3012. Who will challenge the head of Richard Nixon for Presidency of the Earth? The head of Franklin Pierce perhaps? Stay tuned!
