Presidents and Monarchs: Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew

Prince Andrew is the younger brother of King Charles III and and is third child and second son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Andrew is eighth in the line of succession to the British throne, and the first person in the line who is not a descendant of the reigning monarch. He was also a friend of President Bill Clinton thanks to a mutual friend of theirs, once that neither of them probably like to talk about any more. In a recent ITV documentary, Lady Victoria Hervey talks about Clinton's friendship with Prince Andrew, and with Jeffrey Epstein.

Lady Victoria was Prince Andrew's ex-girlfriend. In the documentary, entitled "Ghislaine, Prince Andrew and the Paedophile," she claims that Epstein and former President Bill Clinton both "loved" being around the Duke of York, and that Epstein and Clinton were "like brothers." The ITV documentary explores the relationship between Prince Andrew, British socialite and convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, and convicted sex offender Epstein. It is 45-minutes in length and is hosted by reporter Ranvir Singh. Neither Clinton nor Prince Andrew had responses after the documentary first aired on January 18, 2020. Hervey and Prince Andrew briefly dated in 1999, and she was a longtime friend of Maxwell.

In the documentary, Harvey stated that "[Bill] Clinton was definitely very close to Jeffrey. They were like brothers, you know, and he was close to Ghislaine as well." Asked about Epstein and Clinton's relationship to Prince Andrew, Hervey said, "Prince Andrew was the son of the queen of England. Americans love that. Jeffery loved that. Bill Clinton loved that."

In the early 2000s, Clinton took flights on Jeffrey Epstein's private jet. His explanation for this was that the flights were taken in connection with his work with the Clinton Foundation. In 2019, Clinton's office released a statement. It read:

President Clinton knows nothing about the terrible crimes Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty to in Florida some years ago, or those with which he has been recently charged in New York. In 2002 and 2003, President Clinton took four trips on Jeffrey Epstein's airplane: one to Europe, one to Asia, and two to Africa, which included stops in connection with the work of the Clinton Foundation. Staff, supporters of the Foundation, and his Secret Service detail traveled on every leg of every trip.

The statement added, "He's not spoken to Epstein in well over a decade."

Prince Andrew was a friend of Jeffrey Epstein. BBC News reported in March 2011 about the two men's friendship and there were calls for him to step down from his role as trade envoy. Andrew was also criticized in the media after his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, disclosed that he helped arrange for Epstein to pay off £15,000 of her debts. Andrew was photographed in December 2010 strolling with Epstein in Central Park during a visit to New York City.

On December 30, 2014, a Florida court filing by lawyers Bradley J. Edwards and Paul G. Cassell alleged that Andrew was one of several prominent figures to have participated in sexual activities with a minor later identified as Virginia Giuffre (then known by her maiden name Virginia Roberts). An affidavit from Giuffre was included in an earlier lawsuit from 2008 accusing the US Justice Department of violating the Crime Victims' Rights Act during Epstein's first criminal case by not allowing several of his victims to challenge his plea deal. In January 2015, there was pressure from media and members of the public for Buckingham Palace to explain Andrew's connection with Epstein. Buckingham Palace stated that "any suggestion of impropriety with underage minors is categorically untrue", and the denial was later repeated.

Giuffre claimed that she had sex with Andrew on three occasions, including a trip to London in 2001 when she was 17, and later in New York and on Little Saint James in the U.S. Virgin Islands. She alleged Epstein paid her $15,000 after she had sex with Andrew in London. Flight logs show Andrew and Giuffre were in the places she alleged their meetings took place. Andrew and Giuffre were also photographed together with his arm round her waist, with an Epstein associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, in the background. Andrew's supporters have claimed that the photo is fake and edited.

In August 2019, Andrew released a statement that said, "At no stage during the limited time I spent with [Epstein] did I see, witness or suspect any behavior of the sort that subsequently led to his arrest and conviction." He expressed regret for meeting Epstein in 2010 after Epstein had already pleaded guilty to sex crimes for the first time. In July 2020, Caroline Kaufman, an alleged victim of Epstein, said in a federal lawsuit that she had seen Andrew at Epstein's New York mansion in December 2010. In November 2021 Lawrence Visoski, Epstein's pilot, testified in court during Ghislaine Maxwell's trial that Prince Andrew flew in Epstein's private plane along with other prominent individuals, including Bill Clinton and Donald Trump. Visoski stated he did not notice any sexual activity or wrongdoing on the plane.

Lady Victoria Hervey claimed that Andrew was present at social occasions held by Maxwell. Andrew's name and contact numbers for Buckingham Palace, Sunninghill Park, Wood Farm and Balmoral also appeared in Maxwell and Epstein's 'Little Black Book', a list of contacts of the duo's powerful and famous friends. In February 2022, The Daily Telegraph published a photograph of Andrew along with Maxwell giving a tour of Buckingham Palace to Andrew's guests Bill Clinton and Kevin Spacey.

Neither former Presidents Clinton or Trump have any civil cases against them tied to Epstein, unlike Prince Andrew who has a civil case against him from Virginia Giuffre.
