Father's Day
Happy Father's Day. Father's Day is a holiday conceived of by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas. Her father was a Civil War veteran named William Jackson Smart, who was a single parent who raised his six children in Spokane, Washington. She initially suggested June 5, her father's birthday, but because she did not provide the organizers with enough time to make arrangements, the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. The holiday was first celebrated in the United States on June 10, 1910, 101 years ago today.
The holiday received unofficial support from such figures as then Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan. President Woodrow Wilson's children (his three daughters Margaret, Jessie and Eleanor) first honoured their father on this holiday in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge recommended that Father's Day be made a national holiday in 1924. But it wasn't until 1966, when President Lyndon Johnson made Father's Day a holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June.
