Presidential Libraries
Following up on yesterday's journal entry about the construction of the George W. Bush Presidential Center, below is a list of the sites that have been officially designated as "Presidential Libraries. The Presidential library system is a nationwide network of 18 sites administered by the Office of Presidential Libraries, which is part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). These are not libraries in the modern sense, but rather repositories for preserving and making available the papers, records, collections and other historical materials of every President of the United States since Herbert Hoover.

I've bolded the ones that I have had the privilege of visiting:
1. John Quincy Adams: Stone Library at Adams National Historical Park in Quincy, Massachusetts
2. Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois
3. Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, Ohio
4. William McKinley Presidential Library and Museum in Canton, Ohion
5. Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library in Staunton, Virginia
6. Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library and Museum in Northampton, Massachusetts
7. Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch, Iowa
8. Franklin Delano Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, New York
9. Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum in Independence, Missouri
10. Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene, Kansas
11. John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Dorchester, Massachusetts
12. Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library and Museum in Austin, Texas
13. Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in Yorba Linda, California
14. Gerald Ford Presidential Library at Ann Arbor, Michigan/Gerald Ford Presidential Museum at Grand Rapids, Michigan
15. Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum at Atlanta, Georgia
16. Ronald Reagan Presidential Library at Simi Valley, California
17. George H. W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum at College Station, Texas
18. William J. Clinton Presidential Center and Park at Little Rock, Arkansas

There are other forms of museums honouring Presidents (like Mount Vernon for George Washington, Monticello for Thomas Jefferson, Grant's Tomb in Manhattan, Polk House in Columbia, Tennessee, among others). I'm not sure why these aren't included in the list of Presidential Libraries, but I am sure that they all have enough historical memorabilia to excite a POTUS geek like me.
